Common feelings experienced by parents

Much as the Unit strives to support and involve all parents, those anticipating their baby’s admission to NICU and those still in shock at unexpected problems, will find it difficult to cope at times. Parents thrust into parenthood prematurely, those of babies who need specialised medical and nursing care, will question why they have to experience such stress and may feel failure, guilt and an intense sense of loss. Please feel free to talk to staff, whoever feels appropriate, if you wish. Linking with other parents may be helpful too. Our Thursday coffee morning in the parents room can provide an opportunity to share. Parent befrienders from SCBUPA visit the Unit.

Fathers have their own needs; it’s hard to feel curtailed in your ability to support and protect as you had anticipated. Your fears and feelings are equally important.

Your employers may have no concept of the emotional bond and stress. You can choose to discuss matters with the Family Support Worker before you exhaust yourself by trying to cope by losing all your holiday entitlement or juggling work, home other children and hospital visiting.
